Self-love, simply put, is the love and appreciation we give ourselves. It is integral to personal happiness and growth but more often than not it is overlooked. Self-love looks different for different people - for some, it is appreciating their bodies, their minds and believing in themselves.
Accepting yourself for your brilliance, your uniqueness and your quirks are key to loving yourselves. While not everyone celebrates what makes us different, we must embrace and honor these traits and decisions. Society and peers expect you to be perfect. There are standard established milestones you are expected to follow and behavioral norms you are expected to adhere to irrespective of how they feel for you.

In the last few decades, self-love, respect and esteem have gone from being demonized as selfishness to being recognized as essential to personal development, growth and happiness. It is prioritizing yourself and your happiness, taking care of your needs and ensuring you expect and demand what is best for you.
Self-love looks different for different people - from exercising to eating without guilt, from taking an extra long bath to spending time with your friends, family or even gaming/watching Netflix. What is essential to self-love is being kind and compassionate to yourself.
Why is self-love important?
Self-love makes us happier - When you love yourself you will spend less time feeling bad about your choices and aspects of yourself that include your achievements, your body or even your mistakes.
Self-love helps us improve our relationship with ourselves and others - When you learn to value yourself you will be less dependent on others for validation of self-worth and your role in other people's lives.
Self-love enables us to achieve our goals - When you prioritize yourself and your needs, you are more likely to make the decisions that are good for you. It will also make you more productive as you will experience less guilt and burn-out from doing what you need and want.
Self-love makes us kinder and helps us grow - According to research, self-love is an important aspect of self-compassion and self-compassion is an important factor to being kinder, judgement-free and focused on growth.
